There are times in life when I’m transported directly back to a place of innocence. Like hearing the tune as the Ice Cream Truck approaches my neighborhood.
I remember frantically gathering my nickels and dimes as I yelled to my mom, “Ice Cream Man!” Standing in what seemed to be THE LONGEST line, itchy…what should I get:
-
a Sherbet Push Pop
-
a Rainbow Snow Cone
-
a Nutty Buddy Ice Cream?
Using a tiny wooden spoon I finally reached the bottom of The Screwball… to find a frozen, often stale gum ball… Eureka!
What brings you back to a place of pure joy? Nothing puts a smile on my face like the sight of a little boy wearing a cape, pretending to be Superman, just because he can!
As responsible adults, stuff happens that needs to be handled. Remember to make time to play…even if it’s only for a few minutes. When was the last time you bought yourself an ice cream or ran around the house in a Superman cape?

Trece,
I saw an Ice Cream truck just yesterday and the smile on my face was hugh. I, too, was a gumball diver.
We hear of childhood memories, you are so right, we need to make adult memories.
What makes me smile is disco music and shoulder pads. Remember that blue jacket, that with your strong encouragement, I just recently donated to the Disco Hall of Fame! The shoulder pads were so thick I looked like a football player. Keeping that jacket was a touchstone to happier times.
But, oh, the memories. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.
Ladies, I absolutely love flipkicklisten! Your stories have re-connected me to my inner child, and have made me realize for the first time in several years that I have many fabulous memories. You catapulted me into action…..
I have gotten so much done since you launched this….things I have been avoiding for years! I even connected with a friend I hadn’t spoken with in 28 years-the years vanished, we healed and spent nearly eight hours telling each other what we meant to each other. What a gift!!! I am listening to happy music, dancing around the house and (unfortunately for my neighbors) singing in the shower. YOUR POSITIVITY IS CONTAGIOUS. The pictures pop into my head throughout the day, and has on occasion caused strangers to approach me and ask “eh, what’s going on…that smile looks pretty mischievous”. Thank you for opening up my world.
Trece,
Oh yeah, when we hear that sound we scramble in our house. The other day Gavin and I were dropping off his buddy and there was the ice cream truck. Of course it was just before dinner time, but how can I say no? When his friend actually said. “My Mom will pay you back” I replied, “How often do I get to buy you an ice cream?” I am cherishing the moments.
I must recommend a new fascination with nerf guns in our house has brought back so many fun memories of chasing and being chased. Although, when I was suiting up in my nerf gun apparel and goggles I thought, “maybe it’s time to get a job?”
LOL
