A dream position

kerris text

“Auntie, I need some advice”, the text message read. Within an hour, Kerri and I were sitting on the wall at Wollaston Beach weighing the pros and cons of the situation.  Kerri, a recent college graduate, was thrilled to be moving to Virginia in 2 weeks. That is, until she got an email offering her “dream job” interning as athletic trainer at Disney Wide World of Sports!  She questioned, “Is it ok to go back on my word?…but they’re counting on me.”

Kerri struggled.  She couldn’t be excited about the new offer while she wondered how to break the agreement she had already made. I was proud, as I always am, of Kerri’s level of commitment.  I was looking at her dilemma through the lens of a 40 year old. How often does this happen in our lives?  Can we afford to pass over our dream anything for the perceived “right thing to do.”  Right for whom?

When Kerri called her “boss” in Virginia to withdraw her acceptance, he graciously gave her a gift, “Oh my God, Kerri, when your dream job presents itself, you owe it to yourself to take it!”

What do you dream about doing? Have you taken steps towards it? Is it time to make some changes and let life rearrange itself to support the fulfillment of your dream? Is there anything you owe to yourself? We’d love to hear from you. Please leave your thoughts in the comments section. We encourage you to take an action today that moves you forward!

One of my favorite words in the world is “Auntie”. One of my favorite feelings is being needed, how great to have someone look up to you and need you, to share with you what is going on in their lives. How great it is to be that someone at a time when what you say and don’t say will shape their lives. Trece, how great for you to be that someone.
How great for Kerri for getting the dream job fresh out of college. How I wonder what my life would be like now at the age of 51 to have known what the job was and having it and at the same time having that “special person” in my life to share it with. What a special man Kerri’s former boss was to tell her to go for the gold.
I am feeling empowered and think I am hearing the theme for “Rocky”

When it came down to it I knew that I was going to take Disney I don’t know why I was freaking out. I just needed some guidance which was Auntie and funny enough while we were sitting on the wall a performance group came and did what they loved to do, it was a sign right then I knew my answer. If it wasn’t for Auntie who knows what I would have done? She’s the one person who always knows what to say to me.

    Kerri

Trece,I can’t thank you enough for being there for Kerri. When panic set in and I couldn’t help you where there and I am as always grateful. You always know what to say to her and Johnny and I’m grateful(again) that they have you in their life for support and encouragement. They couldn’t ask for a better friend and “Aunite” Love You Maryanne
